Notable points in Leesburg’s history

  • Leesburg earliest days as a community can be traced back to 1722 when immigrants of different ethnicities and religious backgrounds settled in the area.

  • In 1730, Thomas, the sixth Earl of Fairfax granted 4,054 acres of land (which eventually became Leesburg) to Francis Awbrey. Leesburg was established as a town through the Act of Assembly in 1758 and was officially incorporated in 1813. The town is named after the Lee family, early town leaders and ancestors of Robert E. Lee.

  • During the War of 1812, Leesburg served as a safe haven for the US government, protecting its archives, including the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution.

  • After World War II, Leesburg and other communities in Loudoun County experienced rapid change. With several new government programs including the GI bill, and wartime restrictions on rubber and fuel no longer imposed, veterans had better opportunities to pursue higher education.

  • Leesburg went through some growing pains as its population increased and as the town became more integrated into the greater Washington area. Many of its residents started initiatives to preserve Leesburg’s historic character.

  • Leesburg was further changed during the civil rights movement. Desegregation in the town’s high schools started in 1962 and was fully integrated by 1968. The violence that occurred in some southern towns because of racial integration, however, was not present in Leesburg.

  • Today, Leesburg serves Loudoun County as its center of government and commerce. In 1970, the town’s historic district was officially included on the National Register of Historic Places and was cited as one of the most picturesque and best-preserved downtown districts in Virginia. The town has served as Loudoun County’s seat since the county was established back in 1757.
